Sims Metal has moved to 100% renewable Electricity.  We play a key role in New Zealand’s circular economy, with 9 sites providing metal and electronics recycling to consumers, businesses, governments and communities across the country.Â
Now, we’ll be delivering these circular outcomes that reduce waste and show our support for renewable energy generation!
As of April 1, 2022, 100% of Sims’ electricity use in New Zealand is certified under NZECS, which matches on an annual basis the electricity Sims consumes from the national grid with electricity produced from Meridian Energy’s certified hydro stations and wind farms.
The use of NZECS’ Renewable Energy Certificates means we can now report our market-based Scope 2 electricity emissions as zero*, as Sims International moves to be a global net-zero emissions business by 2050. Â
The 9 sites in New Zealand join more than 30 other Sims sites worldwide that support 100% renewable electricity, a transition Sims has committed to as part of its sustainability strategy and targets – including the 2025 goal to cut emissions by 23% from 2020 levels.
Our purpose, create a world without waste to preserve our planet, is what drives us to constantly innovate and offer new solutions, and we’re proud that the NZECS helps us achieve our sustainability goals for New Zealand.
